TITLE: A Good Lawyer
OBJECT: Judge’s Gavel
STORY WITH THE OBJECT
The other day I was listening to a radio program and the announcer started talking about heaven and asked if it was necessary to know someone to get into heaven. He was probably thinking about someone with connections, maybe someone with a lot of money or a high ecclesiastical position.
TRANSITION TO THE SPIRITUAL
But, you know, the truth is that you do need to know someone. You need to know a good lawyer!
THE PROBLEM (LAW)
Because if God and heaven exist, then you will one day give an account to him for your whole life. And, being a good judge, he will have to be just with everyone. He will have to judge us all by the same laws. And all of us have these laws written on our consciences. If you’ve lied, if you’ve stolen, if you have given yourself over to lust and sexual immorality, if you have blasphemed God’s name, if you have allowed hatred, jealousy, envy and covetousness to fill your heart, then you’ve broken God’s laws and you deserve the punishment of a guilty person.
THE CONSEQUENCES (ETERNITY)
We are all guilty. None of us deserves to enter heaven with our guilt and sin. We all deserve to be sentenced to the eternal prison of hell.
THE SOLUTION (CROSS)
But if you know a good lawyer - someone who has never broken God’s laws, someone who is willing to pay the penalty for the laws you have broken, then the charges brought against you can be canceled. Jesus Christ is a good lawyer.
THE CALL (REPENTANCE AND FAITH)
Jesus will be your mediator before the Judge when you repent from having broken God’s laws, and when you trust completely in his ability to pay your penalty so you can be declared innocent. But you must make a decision. You can be your own lawyer and carry your own sin before the Eternal Judge, or you can call on Jesus to be your lawyer and carry your sin before the judge. Are you willing to turn your back on your sin and turn your life over to Jesus?
