TITLE: Hourglass

OBJECT: An hourglass

DOCTRINE: Reconciliation

STORY WITH THE OBJECT

What I have in my hand is an hourglass. They are not used much anymore except to measure time in certain board games. The great advantage of the hourglass is that when the sand runs out, all you have to do is turn it over and it starts all over again.

TRANSITION TO THE SPIRITUAL

Many times I wish my life was like this, too. If I did something wrong, I wish I could turn back the time and repeat it again until I did it correctly. Have you ever wished you could go back in time to correct something you have done? Unfortunately, we can’t.

THE PROBLEM (LAW)

Every lie you tell turns you into a liar, and there is no turning back. Every angry word that comes out of your mouth is irretrievable. Every time you commit adultery, there is no turning back, the damage is done to your relationships. One day your life will end, and there will be no turning back. What you have done, is done. After you die, there will be a judgment where we will all be judged for what we have done during our lives.

THE CONSEQUENCES (ETERNITY)

The consequences for our actions will be eternal. God put his law in our hearts so that we would obey it, but we have not paid any attention to him, instead we have decided to live as if we were our own god. It doesn’t make any sense for God to say, “You didn’t pay any attention to me during your life, you lived however you wanted without even thinking about me, but it doesn’t matter, I will let you into my eternal home.” That is not going to happen. Since you have decided to live far from God in this life, you will go to a place that is far from God for eternity in hell.

THE SOLUTION (CROSS)

But, it is not too late! God loves you and knew you would fail. That is why he sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to pay the punishment you deserve. Even though Jesus was perfect, he died on a cross for you to reconcile you to God. Then he rose from the dead to demonstrate his power to save and forgive you.

THE CALL (REPENTANCE AND FAITH)

If you are worried about spending eternity far from God, repent from having lived for yourself instead of for him. Ask him for forgiveness for being his enemy instead of his friend. Thank Jesus for dying in your place and choose to begin to follow him and live to please him. Take advantage of the time you have today to get right with God.
