TITLE: A Hidden Disease
OBJECT: A mask
STORY WITH THE OBJECT
There was a king who had a disease that disfigured his face. Because he was ashamed to be seen that way, he covered his face with a mask, pretending that everything was OK.
TRANSITION TO THE SPIRITUAL
After several years, his disease grew worse, but his pride kept him from asking for help from the doctors to receive treatment, and one day the king died with his mask on. We are like this king because we also have a disease that we try to hide with a mask.
THE PROBLEM (LAW)
We hide behind a mask saying, “I’m a good person” while we hide the lust in our heart that drives us to look at pornography, commit adultery and have sex outside of marriage. We hide behind our mask saying, “I don’t hurt anyone” while we hide the hatred, bitterness, and greed inside that not only hurts others, but also eats away at our minds and hearts. Our sickness is called “sin.”
THE CONSEQUENCES (ETERNITY)
If we do not treat our disease of sin, one day it will cause death, an eternal death separated forever from our holy Creator.
THE SOLUTION (CROSS)
There is only one person who can heal us of our disease of sin - the Great Physician, Jesus Christ. He took our disease upon Himself when He died on the cross, and when He rose again, He destroyed the power of sin and death.
THE CALL (REPENTANCE AND FAITH)
In order to receive the cure, first you must recognize your sickness. You must humble yourself before God, take off your mask of pride, and ask the Great Physician, Jesus Christ, to remove all the sin from your heart. Put your life in the hands of Jesus to receive healing for your soul. Don’t be like the king, who because of his pride did not receive the cure for his disease. Only Jesus can heal your soul and give you new life.
