TITLE: Pirates

OBJECT: Pirate patch or pirate hat

DOCTRINE: Propitiation

STORY WITH THE OBJECT

There is a movie I really like called “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Maybe you’ve seen it. It is the story of a treasure that has been cursed because of the pirates who participated in its theft. They were living dead and couldn’t enjoy anything of life on earth. They couldn’t eat or drink, and only came out at night. To get rid of the curse, they had to find a descendant of one of the pirates who had not participated in the theft, and he had to spill his blood over the treasure.

TRANSITION TO THE SPIRITUAL

This story really caught my attention because it is so similar to another story written many years ago about humanity that became cursed because of disobedience against God.

THE PROBLEM (LAW)

God established certain laws and we have broken them all. We’ve lied; we’ve dishonored our parents; we haven’t loved God above all things, and we haven’t loved our neighbor as ourselves.

THE CONSEQUENCES (ETERNITY)

We have fallen under a curse because of our rebellion, which includes an eternal penalty separated from God in hell without the possibility of enjoying eternal life.

THE SOLUTION (CROSS)

But just like the pirates needed to find a man who was innocent of the theft to spill his blood and break the curse, the same is true of humanity. A man came to earth who did not participate in any of the sinful things we have done, and he spilled his blood on a cross so that you and I would not longer be cursed. Jesus Christ took our curse upon himself, and when he died and rose again, he declared that all who trust in him can be saved.

THE CALL (REPENTANCE AND FAITH)

Today, if you want the curse of sin to be broken over your life; if you want to receive salvation, come to Jesus, turn from your sins, and surrender your whole life to the one who gave his life for you.
