TITLE: Shoplifting

OBJECT: Toy figure

DOCTRINE: Justification

STORY WITH THE OBJECT

When we were young, my brother and I went shopping with our mother, and while she was filling the grocery cart, we went to the toy section. Thinking that no one was watching us, we began to fill our pockets with Star Wars toy figures. As we stood in line waiting for my mother to pay, the store security guard called our mother aside and told her what we had in our pockets. She became pale and ended up paying for the toys we had stolen. When we got home, we were punished for almost 3 months.

TRANSITION TO THE SPIRITUAL

This makes me think about our lives. Just like my brother and I dishonored our mother when we stole the toys, all of humanity has dishonored our Heavenly Father by doing wrong time and time again.

THE PROBLEM (LAW)

When we use His name in vane, we dishonor Him; when we hurt and deceive others, we dishonor Him; with our prideful attitudes, our disputes, and our jealousy, we dishonor Him.

THE CONSEQUENCES (ETERNITY)

We will all die one day and present ourselves before our Heavenly Father to give an account for everything we have done. He will judge us and we won’t be able to say we were good because the evidence is against us and He will have to punish us; He will have to send us away, far from Him.

THE SOLUTION (CROSS)

But just like my mother paid the price for what we had stolen, God also has paid the price for our sins. He sent His only son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross. He shed his blood and rose from the dead so that you and I could have a second chance, so that we wouldn’t have to spend eternity in hell.

THE CALL (REPENTANCE AND FAITH)

Today God offers you forgiveness through the death of His son, Jesus Christ. If you want to receive His forgiveness, you must leave your sin behind and give your life to the only one who gave everything for you, Jesus Christ.
