TITLE: The Lamp
OBJECT: An antique lamp
STORY WITH THE OBJECT
The other day I found this lamp next to the garbage. Since I like antiques, I took it home with me, hoping to restore it. I imagined how this lamp would be all cleaned up and restored. But all I was able to do was dirty everything that touched the lamp. Restoring the lamp was more than I was able to handle.
TRANSITION TO THE SPIRITUAL
How many of us are like this lamp?
THE PROBLEM (LAW)
We were designed with a beautiful purpose, but we have become so dirtied with lies, criticism, abortion, sexual immorality, and covetousness, always wanting what we don’t have.
THE CONSEQUENCES (ETERNITY)
Unfortunately, we are not fulfilling the original purpose of our lives, and our sin has destroyed us so much that we deserve spend eternity far from a perfect and holy God.
THE SOLUTION (CROSS)
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a clean heart? Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a heart full of good words, love, purity and gratitude? If it is difficult to restore a lamp like this one, how can your dirty heart be restored? What we cannot do, Jesus Christ can do. Jesus came to this world to cleanse your heart and restore your life, and he did it when he died on the cross and rose again.
THE CALL (REPENTANCE AND FAITH)
Do you want Jesus to cleanse you and restore you? Come to him, leave your sin behind, and give him your life. He will restore your life to its original purpose, a life that pleases God and is full of the life of God.
